The Rotunda of the Capitol

The coffered interior of the United States Capitol dome seen from directly below, ring upon ring of recessed panels narrowing toward the Apotheosis of Washington fresco at the center.

Seen from the floor, the dome resolves into structure before it resolves into ornament. Concentric rings of coffers narrow toward the center, a radial symmetry the eye reads first and names later. Geometry holds the fresco.
